Nepal Rising

It looks like all of Nepal is on the move against King Gyanendra and his dictatorial rule. The four day general strike, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the 1990 democracy movement, has prompted an outpouring of resistance that has only been fueled by the tragic death of several protesters and heavy-handedness of the police. For now, there is no let up in the demonstrations that are taking place across the country. The movement is quickly evolving into a general revolution for democracy and may spell the end of the monarchy and the political deadlock that has gripped the country for more than two years.

Note, this is not Maoist-led general strike, but one led by the seven-parliamentary-party alliance that has the tacit support of the Maoists. The two biggest parties, the Nepali Congress and United Marxist Leninists (yes, it's one of the largest ML groups in the world) have called for continuous demonstrations.

International Nepal Solidarity Network maintains an informative site on the current people's struggle. Its domain name is banned in Nepal, but it has been able to work around the information blockade and get news to Nepal and the Nepali diaspora.
